Make names of jump disciplines more logical

The Rulebook currently recognises four disciplines of jumping (see 13D.4 u/i 13D.7), with the current names:
(a) High Jump
(b) Platform High Jump
(c) Long Jump
(d) Long Jump on Platform.

These names are not logical in my opinion, and for riders who are new to the sport, they may be confusing, for the following reasons:
(1) There are two types of High Jump, but one of them is simply titled High Jump
(2) There are two types of Long Jump, but one of them is simply titled Long Jump
(3) The names for the two types of Platform Jump are formed in a different way.

I would like the names to be more descriptive, clearer, and internally consistent.
E.g., they could be:
(a) High Jump over Bar
(b) High Jump on Platform
(c) Long Jump over Bar
(d) Long Jump on Platform.

Thoughts?

I think the jumps names do need changing but long jump over bar makes no sense.

To me, it should be:

High Jump - Track

Long Jump - Track

High Jump - Platform

Long Jump - Platform

Comment

Those names would work too. But it may not be obvious to a newcomer or layman how track and platform relate te jumps, let alone what the difference is. My suggested names are more descriptive.

"Long Jump over Bar" does make sense to me.
In high jump, "over bar" means something like "higher than bar", i.e. greater vertical distance.
In long jump, "over bar" would indicate "farther than bar", i.e. greater horizontal distance. (Where bar is the marker the rider has to clear when landing.)

Comment

(a) High Jump over Bar
(b) High Jump on Platform
(c) Long Jump over Bar
(d) Long Jump on Platform.

I dont mind too much either way howeve rin terms of the current names and the suggested changes

(b) Platform High Jump
(d) Long Jump on Platform

to

(b) High Jump on Platform
(d) Long Jump on Platform

I also thing these are slightly confusing. I think if they were to be changed they should be something more like

(b) High Jump onto Platform
(d) Long Jump on Platform

because long jump you are starting and ending on the platform, high jump you are starting on the ground and ending on the platform. So the same name for both doesn't seem quite logical when I think about it.

Comment

I'm happy with High Jump onto Platform.

Come to think of it, Long Jump on Platform may also be confusing, as you are not starting and ending on the same platform. A more descriptive name would be Long Jump from Platform to Platform, but I guess this is too wordy to work as a name. I see no better alternative than just what it is now.

Comment

I am happy this discussion was created, I also agree that the current names are too messy.

I am not a native English speaker, but Long Jump Over Bar also sounds a bit confusing to me. I would definitely not call it Long Jump on Ground either, but I like using the word "Track". How about these:

(a) High Jump over Bar
(b) High Jump onto Platform
(c) Long Jump on Track (or Long Jump - Track)
(d) Long Jump on Platform

Comment

I agree with your (c). I prefer Long Jump on Track, because then all four names have the same structure.

Is it an idea to change (d) into Long Jump on Platforms? Plural form to indicate that it's not a single platform that you do a longjump on.

Comment

I believe long jump on platform is less confusing that calling it long jump on platforms. The event will never be set up just from the name so the fact that there is not a plural platforms in the name doesn't matter.

if you went with plural then it should be

Long Jump across platforms

But i think this level of detail is unnecessary

OK.

Comment

I agree with Steven. Long jump on platform sounds much better too.

Comment

I agree too!

Comment

Can someone write this up?

Comment

So is this what we agree on? or do people want Long Jump over Bar?

(a) High Jump over Bar
(b) High Jump onto Platform
(c) Long Jump on Track
(d) Long Jump on Platform

Comment

I think we don't want Long Jump over Bar. Several people found it confusing or not making sense.

I would be fine with the names in the previous post. If no-one complains about those in the next, say, 36 hours, I'll make a proposal.

All good with me
